Studies on Air Pollution in Seoul and Daejeon City.

Abstract
|
|
|
This study was made on air pollution in Seoul and Daejeon City form June 1st to the end of November, 1971.
Seoul City was divided into 3 areas, i.e., the industrial area, the downtown area, and the residential area.
Nine surveying sites were selected each representing above characteristics of the area.
Daejeon City was divided into 4 areas, i.e., the industrial area, the downtown area, the commercial area, and the residential area. Eight surveying sites were selected each representing above characteristics of the area.
The measuring methods employed were the lead dioxide method according to the A.S.T.M. D2010-65 for sulfur oxides, the samplified English Deposit Gauge method for dustfall and the Rion Noise meter for noise level.
The results are as follows+
1. Seoul city
(1) The mean value of sulfer oxides was 1.98 mgSO_(3)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2) ranging from 0.29 to 4.72 mgSO_(3)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2)
(2) The mean value of sulfur oxides by area was 2.45 mgSO_(3)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2) in the industrial area, 2.25 in the downtown area, and 1.16 in the residential area.
(3) The degree of pollution due to sulfur oxides showed that 42% of the total measurement was in the range of common degree and 43% was above the range of middle degree according to Mr. Tarab´s classification methods.
(4) The mean value of dustfall was 36.47 ton/km^(2)/month, ranging from 8.37 to 114.15 ton/km^(2)/month.
(5) The mean value of dustfall by area was 62.55 ton/km^(2)/month in the downtown area, 30.47 in the industrial area and 16.85 in the residential area.
(6) The mean value of dustfall by month was 40.96 ton/km^(2)/month in Nov., 40.65 in Aug., 39.56 in Sept., 39.23 in Oct., 32.00 in June and 26.42 in July.
(7) The mean value of noise level was 71 phon, range from 52 to 92 phon.
2. Daejeon City
(1) The mean value of sulfur oxides was 0.57 mgSO_(3)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2) ranging from 0.23 to 1.12 mgSO_(3)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2).
(2) The mean value of sulfur oxides by area was 0.66 mgSO_(3)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2) in the downtown area, 0.64 in the industrial area, 0.57 in ithe commercial area, and 0.41 in the residential area.
(3) The degree of pollution due to sulfur oxides showed that 96% of the total measurement was int he range of minor degree, and 4% was in the range of common degree according to Mr. Tarabe´s classification methods.
(4) The mean value of dustfall was 23.96 ton/km^(2)/month, ranging 8.17 to 45.76 ton/km^(2)/month.
(5) The mean value of dustfall by area was 33.10 ton/km^(2)/month in the downtown area, 28.82% in the industrial area, 22.74 in ithe commercial area, and 11.18 in residential area.
(6) The mean value of noise level was 67 phon, ranging from 45 to 81 phon.
